Family Law & Divorce

Financial problems created by today’s economic climate have increased the rate of divorce in Missouri. You and your family do not have to face the difficulty of divorce alone.

During this stressful time, it is wise to have a seasoned advocate on your side, negotiating on your behalf and promoting your interests.

At the law offices of Thomas, Birdsong, Mills & McBride, PC, we have been advocating for mid-Missouri clients since 1971. We believe that every client is important, and deserves hands-on attention throughout the process of divorce and afterwards.

Helping You Deal with the Difficult Decisions of Divorce

If you decide to divorce, our lawyers and paralegals will work with you one-on-one, so that you understand how the case process works. Even though your family is changing, your children will belong to the two of you forever.

Nobody “wins” in a fight over the children. Important decisions such as child support and custody are best made in the interests of the children.

Fair and Equitable Property Division in Divorce

In Missouri, marital property division during divorce is based upon fair and equitable distribution of marital assets and debts. The court considers the income and economic situation of each spouse during the divorce and afterwards to fairly divide property that was acquired during the marriage, as well as debts, pensions or retirement accounts.

The 25th Judicial Circuit (Phelps, Maries, Texas and Pulaski counties) has special programs in place to help avoid the pain and stress of going to trial in family law cases.

The court encourages divorcing spouses to talk about these important decisions and work them out informally, with resources for mediation and alternative dispute resolution.

If mediation or Special Masters ADR is not successful in your case, the lawyers of Thomas, Birdsong, Mills & McBride, PC can sit down with your spouse’s attorneys to negotiate a settlement.

Family Law Issues Outside of Divorce

If you have a family law issue such as adoption or paternity, our skilled attorneys can help you navigate the legal system to achieve the desired outcome. We handle a variety of legal issues for people and families throughout central Missouri

Fathers of children born out of wedlock may protect their parental rights by registering on the putative fathers’ registry.
